Padusan stems
from the root word ‘adus’, which is Javanese for ‘taking a bath’. It refers to
practice of cleansing oneself from physical and spritual impurities with water,
and traditonally performed at the start of the Ramadhan fasting season.
The show
features two motifs; Matirta, and Mega Mendung and Fish. ‘Matirta’, derived
from the Indonesian word ‘air’, is the water used to cleanse one’s body and
spirit. Kawung and Gringsing are the batik designs used within Matirta. The
geometric pattern of Kawung stands for a focal point of power and strength in
the universe, as well as in humans. ‘Gringsing’ means ‘to not be sick’ or ‘to
be healthy’. As such, Matirta is filled with the hope or intention that we are
always blessed with good health and long life. The prevailing idea is that
mankind is given strength and health when we use water to cleanse ourselves.
Mega Mendung and Fish depicts the entire ecosystem from the sky to the river bed; a harmonious relationship between the sky and the land where everything is interconnected in order to maintain the intergrity of the ecosytem. The sky inspired by the Mega Mendung-an expression for the gloomy skies before of after rain-batik motif from Cirebon. It carries the belief that every human being should be able to ease their anger or emotions regardless of situation. The flow of the river’s water, the fish that live in it, and the stones at the bottom is a balancing act. This ecosystem is never limited to the countryside or village, as it also exist in the city. A river’s environment creates equilibrium, and is an essential part of life as it can help people to rid themselves of impurities.
This collection show the brand’s shift to a more sustainable way of doing fashion,as it make greater use of Bemberg and Tencel-two semi synthetic fibers. Produced solely by the Asahi Kasei Corporation in Japan, Bemberg undergoes an ecological cycle and production process. It is a type of rayon yarn made from regenerated cotton, but with a softer and smoother finish on the skin. Tencel uses the cellulose from wood pulp. It is produced on a ‘closed-loop’ process, meaning more than 98% of the (non-toxic) chemical involved are retained and recycled. It is also known for its wrinkle-resistant property.both Bemberg and Tencel are biodegradable, and widely applauded to be environmentally-friendly alternatives to cotton.
